I made a MySQL database for my movies! (Python, bash)
I made a MySQL database for my movie collection, and I thought I'd share the lessons I learned along the way. For all that follows, I was working in Ubuntu 12.04. I keep my movies - 400 of them - on an external hard drive. The path to the movies was /media/"Television and Movies"/Movies. The folder I used to put all my stuff related to building this database was ~/Desktop/"Database Setup Stuff" What I did: 1) All my movie files have format "name (year).filetype". For example, one of my films is "Mean Girls (2005).avi" I wanted my database to include length, which meant I needed a program which could grab the lengths from the films. I ended up using a program called avprobe. I wrote a bash script to run through all the files in my movie folder and output the result of avprobe to a file. PROBLEMS: Avprobe writes to stderr, which I didn't realize. So when I ran my script, I had to add 2>&1 after the write command so that both stdout and stderr would go to the file. Also, I initially had the write command in the bash script, which ended up writing over anything it had written before as it looped, so my output file only had avprobe data from my last movie, Zoolander. After I realized this, I removed the write command from the script and just called it from the terminal with the write command. 2) Now I have a file FULL of this crazy avprobe output for four hundred different files. What I needed to to was grab the name of the film, the year (both in the title I store it under) and the length (which came from the avprobe results) from this file, and put all that into a CSV. So I wrote a python script using regular expressions to do this. Problems: I initially tried using regular expressions to get the name and year separately, but because some titles had numbers and parentheses in them, this turned out to be tricky. So instead, I just used a single regular expression to get the name and year from my file name, and then split that string up before writing to the CSV. 3) Next, I wanted to query IMDB to get the ratings and casts from each film. To do this, I looked at what happens when you search IMDB for a film - you get a url that looks like this: http://www.imdb.com/find?q=aeon+flux&s=all. As you can see, it has the movie name in the url. So I took the titles from my CSV, wrote a python script which turned them into urls of this kind using character substitution, and then going to that url using the python library urllib. I would then save the source of the site locally and use regular expressions grab the link to the top search result, on the assumption that searching the exact name and year of a movie will always result in the desired film being the top search result. Then I'd open THAT link, again with urllib, and use regular expressions to grab the genres, rating, director, and top three cast members. Together with the title, year, and length from the first CSV, were all written to another CSV. Problems: This one was a doozy. The first problem I had was that I had to make sure all the little symbols in the titles - commas, parentheses, colons, etc. - got mapped to the proper expressions in urls. For example, searching for a film with a comma in it on IMDB returns a link that has %2C in place of the comma. All those conversions had to happen. Also, because of the way my movies were ripped, I sometimes have a file called "The Godfather (Disc 1)" and "The Godfather (Disc 2)". I had to replace the expressions "(Disc 1)" and "(Disc 2)" with nothing. Finally, I had to modify many of my movie titles, since I name my movies oddly in order to group like movies together within the over alphabetical ordering - eg, I had titled "Casino Royale (2006)" as "James Bond - Casino Royale (2006)", and similiarly with other Bond films, so all the Bond films would be together. This practice had to end in order for the IMDB searches to be successful. I had a few bad reads of the IMDB site, which would freeze up the process when I tried to write values to the output file that I'd never gotten in the first place. I solved this by appending null values, like "N/A" or "Unknown," in a bunch of places. It's kind of a hack job because even non-empty lists got these appended values. Another hackjob comes with using re.findall(). I would love to just select the first instance because frequently that was all I needed, for example, when finding the IMDB rating of a film. But I don't know how to do that, so I would use findall and just select the 0 entry for it, ignoring all others. Finally, an UNRESOLVED problem: The way the source of IMDB pages works is that it gives the word Director, then a link to that directors page, and then the name. In there is a carriage return, which was messing up my regex even when I used multiline. I instead used a regex to find everything after director for 50 characters or so and save that as a string and then regex that to get the director's name. This process works fine, except that when we get to the cast it relies on IMDB presenting the director, two writers, and three cast members. When a film only has one writer, my cast list misses the first actor and grabs the production studio as the third. You can see what I'm talking about by looking at the source page for any IMDB movie page. Ctrl-f for itemprop='url'> and you'll see there's one instance for the director, then either one or two instances for the writers, and then three instances for the main cast. I grab those three for the main cast but in the cases where there is one writer, this messes up - grabbing the 3rd, 4th and 5th instances in that case gives me instead the 2nd and 3rd cast member, but not the first, and also the next instance that's 2500 lines down, which is the production company. If I knew how to use regular expressions with carriage returns, I could have a more exact regular expression and avoid this problem. 4) After installing MySQL, I prepared to read the final CSV file into the database, but boy did I have trouble with that. Eventually what worked was load data local infile '/home/jacob/Desktop/Database Setup Stuff/imdb_out.csv' into table movies fields terminated by ';' (name, year, genres, rating, director, cast, length); Problems: When I logged into MySQL, I hadn't set up permissions to read files in at all. Local infile was forbidden. In order to get it to work, I had to use mysql --local-infile -u root -p media Furthermore, I tried about a dozen variation of load data local infile '/home/jacob/Desktop/"Database Setup Stuff"/imdb_out.csv' into table movies fields terminated by ';' (name, year, genres, rating, director, cast, length); before I realized that the directory was already in quotes, and thus the double quotes for "Database Setup Stuff" might be unnecessary.
